The Dark Truth Behind Angelina Jolie's Sleeping Beauty Remake! Mon March 17th, 2025
The Dark Truth Behind Angelina Jolie's Sleeping Beauty Remake!
Acting has sometimes entwined with politics, and Angelina Jolie has long been an outspoken activist. Maleficent, the Mrs. Smith actress's biggest solo hit, encouraged her activism to align with Disney's mission to retell fairy tales for a more progressive audience. The 2014 adaptation of Sleeping Beauty was drastically changed by the studio's attempt to convey a message through the retelling of its classic tales.

Jolie portrays the designated title evil queen, costarring with Elle Fanning as Aurora. However, this time, her role is not just a villain; rather, she is a victim of Aurora's white father. Furthermore, in contrast to the 1959 original, Aurora is not awakened by the prince's kiss either, and Maleficent's relationship with her is what revives her, reversing the traditional rescue. Maleficent also quietly disguises itself as a chilling story of a "rape revenge fantasy," even if these exchanges lay the mood for a different tone.

Stefan, Aurora's father, is prominently portrayed in the Maleficent narrative as the real traitor. Maleficent is left broken in one of the early scenes when he gives her a medication and amputates her wings while she is asleep. Although children were the intended audience for the PG-rated film, reviewers referenced this specific scene as a metaphor for r**e, pointing to a man abusing a lady after he had drunken her. Jolie confirmed that the journalists were correct in their attribution.

In a viral media chat, Jolie revealed, “‘What could make a woman become so dark and lose all sense of her maternity, her womanhood, and her softness?,’ she posed the question before answering it. “We were very conscious, the writer and I, that [the scene] was a metaphor for r**e.” The Maria star added, “At the core, it is abuse, and how the abused then have a choice of abusing others or overcoming and remaining loving, open people.”

The vengeance plot of the movie is driven by this r**e stand-in, which is a man's conduct against her. Jolie's character is portrayed by Maleficent as a risen victim rather than a frigid queen. By the conclusion, Maleficent is healed by her bond with the girl, even if her curse on Aurora was still caused by her hatred for Stefan, betraying the original story. Unlike Disney's previous series of defenseless princesses saved by love, this take is unique. Jolie's portrayal of the suffering and decision elevates it above a mere story. Despite this, it is still Disney's family business, with a focus on healing and abuse.
