Cynthia Erivo has talked candidly about the mental and physical strain that filming Wicked put on her. The performer disclosed how much work she put into the character in a media chat. Her rigorous schedule involved long hours, difficult stunts, and little sleep.
Erivo talked about her dedication to challenging herself both emotionally and physically, adding, “I consciously run towards things that will use me physically, as well as mentally, because I believe that the body and the mind are truly intrinsically linked.”
Cynthia Erivo's sleep regimen was among the most unexpected things she disclosed. She slept for an average of only three hours every night during filming. Before her 5 a.m. call time, she worked out for two hours in the morning and then spent another two hours in the makeup chair.
The physical demands of her job required the rigorous routine. “Sometimes the body is the thing that tells the mind what to do, and sometimes the mind is the thing that will tell the body what to do,” she revealed. She went on to say that because she is a highly physical person, she wants both things to be utilized.
Cynthia spent a lot of time getting stronger for Wicked's soaring sequences. Despite acknowledging her lack of flying expertise, the actor was adamant about accepting the task.
To get ready for these scenes, Erivo collaborated closely with Jo McLaren, her stunt coordinator. "If they are doing a loop to loop, which is that big loop," she explained, "she has to get herself over and around without her legs just falling behind her." She was determined to perform her own stunts in spite of the challenges. “Jo asked me, ‘Are you sure you want to do all of this?’ And I said, ‘Yes.’”
