Recall the time Raja Krishna Menon's film Airlift had Akshay Kumar as Ranjit Katyal, who saved Indians from Kuwait? The 2016 movie was based on the life of Indian businessman Mathunny Mathews, who resides in Kuwait.
The principal part in Airlift was first offered to the late actor Irrfan Khan by the film's creators before Akshay. It was all revealed by director Nikkhil Advani, who produced the film starring Akshay and Nimrat Kaur.
Producer Nikkhil Advani disclosed in a recent media talk that Irrfan Khan was selected to play Ranji Katyal, but he turned down the opportunity and recommended Akshay Kumar instead.
Advani, who worked with Irrfan on D-Day (2013), revealed that the director of Airlift wanted him to take on the part. The late actor overheard the producer of Airlift telling the director that he would arrange a meeting with Irrfan.
"He told me, 'Boss, mere sath mat kar ye picture' (Don’t do this film with me). It is a fantastic film but don’t do it with me because you will not get the budget. Go to Akshay," Advani revealed.
Nikkhil Advani also mentioned that Akshay Kumar expressed interest in Airlift but rejected a script. Khiladi Kumar questioned the producer's decision to approach Irrfan Khan after he told him about his refusal to participate in Airlift.
Advani informed him that the director need seminars and that it was a significant role. Akshay, though, accepted the challenge and showed up to every workshop.
