Sanjay Leela Bhansali is among those extraordinarily gifted directors who, through his internationally recognized works, has brought great pride to the nation. Having received numerous National Film Awards and a Padma Shri, he is still a source of inspiration for budding directors and even for those who have already entered the field. Popular filmmaker Nikkhil Advani is one among them; he recently stated that it wouldn't be shocking if Bhansali represented his upcoming TV series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar at international events such as the Emmys.
In a media chat, seasoned Indian director Nikkhil Advani discussed a number of subtle aspects of the craft. Speaking about how OTT is altering the way people consume content in the nation and whether or not that has improved the film industry, he stated that while there are a number of excellent streaming series and films available, none have been able to come close to the popularity of foreign series like Squid Game and others.
However, he believes that Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar would disprove that theory and mark a sea change for Indian cinema on Netflix. He told, “I think what will break everything is Heeramandi, globally.” Nikkhil further added, “After Padmaavat the Indian diaspora was doing ghoomar in San Francisco. Now, the West will watch because what is it that we have? We have snake charmers and elephants, right? Unfortunately, we have been the country of snake charmers. But foreigners want that only. They still come in for exotica. RRR was exotica. They have not seen S. S. Rajamouli’s Eega,” he further added.
Additionally, Nikkhil mentioned how much he wanted to see Sanjay Leela Bhansali represent Heeramandi in international award ceremonies. “I am looking forward to seeing Mr. Bhansali in his Jamawar, sitting at the Golden Globes and Emmys next year. I think what Monica (Shergill) and the company did with RRR, they will do with Heeramandi,” he revealed.
