Director Tinnu Anand shares about facing 1 year of poverty after film Shahenshah was shelved!
Shahenshah, starring Amitabh Bachchan, is hailed as one among his masterpieces! However, the actor experienced a significant health crisis shortly before the start of filming. The production was put on hold for a year, according to director Tinnu Anand, which caused him serious financial problems. He confessed, " I experienced one year of poverty," turning to commercial films to make ends meet.

In a press conference, director-producer Tinnu Anand said that Amitabh Bachchan's severe health problems almost caused Shahenshah to fail. After suffering a potentially fatal on-set mishap during the filming of Coolie, the actor was eventually diagnosed with myasthenia gravis, an uncommon autoimmune disease that results in muscle weakening. Days before Shahenshah was supposed to start filming, Big B received the diagnosis, which forced him to step aside and caused serious financial difficulties for the project.

The filmmaker clarified that Shahenshah was canceled after a significant sum of money had been paid for the crew, plane tickets, and other costs. After that, creditors started chasing him for repayment, which put him in a tight spot because it was impossible to pay back such a big amount. He started looking for a successor to handle the situation, weighing actors like Jackie Shroff and Jeetendra for Amitabh Bachchan's Shahenshah part.

Tinnu Anand disclosed that Jackie was the initial person to show interest, saying, "We had to make Shahenshah, and it took us a year. Jackie was the first to agree. He enjoyed the attention he was receiving about possibly replacing Amitabh Bachchan in Shahenshah. He signed three or four more films because of that buzz." Additionally, Tinnu revealed that Jeetendra wavered, saying he didn't think he could replace Amitabh. "Jeetendra, on the other hand, said, 'I don’t think I can fit into Amitabh’s shoes'," he revealed.

Though Tinnu thought about other choices, she eventually realized that Amitabh Bachchan was the only one who could really embody Shahenshah. Consequently, Tinnu faced severe financial hardship and had to turn to ad films in order to make ends meet. She went on to say, "I experienced one year of poverty," after the movie was shelved. Reassuring Tinnu was Ajitabh Bachchan (Bunty), Amitabh's brother, who said he would go back to Shahenshah when Amitabh recovered and finished two unfinished projects.

Eventually, Tinnu Anand created Shahenshah, which became one of Amitabh Bachchan's biggest hits when it was released in 1988. The actor is still referred to as "Bollywood's Shahenshah" with fondness. In the movie, Amitabh played two distinct roles: a vigilante seeking justice at night and a corrupt police officer during the day. Meenakshi Seshadri, Pran, Amrish Puri, Prem Chopra, and Sharat Saxena were also members of the cast. The story was notably written by Jaya Bachchan, which gives the film's legacy a unique touch.
