Chandu Champion, directed by Kabir Khan, is one among the most anticipated sports dramas of 2024. Kartik Aaryan plays the main character in the film, which is slated to release on June 14. Known for his skill as a director, Khan previously directed the Ranveer Singh-led 83, which explored the incredible journey of Kapil Dev and India's historic victory at the 1983 World Cup. He recently offered his opinions after giving some thought to the box office result of 83 and its effect on him.
The third wave of COVID-19 in India resulted in lockdowns, which hurt the box office performance of Ranveer Singh's movie 83. In a media conversation, Kabir Khan discusses the experience and says that it put a filmmaker's resolve and strength to the test. He says that even with his years of experience in the business, he still found it depressing when the movie ran into problems. He feels that 83 was his best work in terms of craftsmanship. Unfortunately, there were delays in its release, and the day of its debut was not ideal.
Kabir Khan acknowledges that 83's box office collapse had a big influence on him as well. He acknowledges that he was depressed over it for perhaps a month or two. But the positive reviews the movie received when it was released on OTT platforms brought attention to the fact that it had remained mostly undiscovered up until that point. The director found motivation to go on despite this obstacle since he did not see box office receipts as the only measure of the movie's success.
The director continues, elaborating on earlier projects and acknowledging their financial success. His emphasis is on the encouraging comments he has received. According to his prediction, the historical evaluation of 83 will hinge on its audience's fondness and effect. Four years have gone by, but Kabir Khan says he's still getting notes complimenting the movie.
Khan also reflected on his choice to pursue a different sports-themed story after 83, admitting that popular opinion may have advised against it. “Logic would have said don’t pick up Chandu Champion. It’s also a true story, a sports biopic. What happened to 83 at the box office should have made me try something else. But no! This film gives me goosebumps every time I think about it. It’s compelling me to make this. That is the gut instinct I trusted before, and that is the gut instinct I will stick to and continue," he revealed.
In the meantime, 83 explores Kapil Dev's incredible journey and India's momentous 1983 World Cup triumph. As Kapil Dev, Ranveer Singh plays the part, and Deepika Padukone appears in passing as his spouse.
