Shabana Azmi recalls Mahesh Bhatt didn't have a script during the filming of Arth! Tue October 22nd, 2024

For the 1982 drama film Arth, Mahesh Bhatt teamed together Shabana Azmi and Kulbhushan Kharbanda. The cast received recognition and popularity as a result of the film's eventual success at the box office. Years later, Azmi said that the director was "going through a personal crisis" and didn't have a script when he was making the picture.

At the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2024, which commemorated her 50 years in the industry, Shabana Azmi received the Excellence in Cinema Award. She also gave a masterclass and discussed some of her classic films at the prestigious event. The seasoned actress claimed that the 1982 drama movie Arth lacked a storyline in the traditional sense. Mahesh Bhatt was experiencing a crisis in his personal life. We didn't have a script," she was reported as stating in a daily. That being said, Azmi revealed that they had a story idea and it developed while they were filming. She also recalls showing up on sets in her own clothes and describing the film as being quite "ad hoc."

However, she quickly added that the filmmaker had a strong desire to finish the picture. It seemed as though Bhatt would hit a button and begin acting right away. Shabana Ji described it as an incredible experience, saying that Alia Bhatt's father would tell her, "Artificial conflict is not allowed, we don't have time, you better do it," on days when she refused to do a challenging scene shortly after it was explained to her.

The actress from Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani posted a video of herself on Instagram a few hours ago, showcasing her range of emotions. She talked on how the movie affected her life in the caption. She also mentioned how excited she was to see it again on a large screen. Azmi penned, “When #MaheshBhatt offered me #Arth he said “This film will change your life”. It did. Will be watching it with the audience on the big screen after decades. This is the magic of film festivals.”

For the film, Shabana Azmi took home the National Film Award for Best Actress. In supporting parts, Arth also featured Smita Patil, Raj Kiran, and Rohini Hattangadi.
