Prateik Babbar to share experience of watching mom Smita Patil's film Manthan at Cannes! Mon May 20th, 2024

The famous Bollywood actor Prateik Babbar, who is the son of Smita Patil and Raj Babbar, was never able to meet his mother. Shortly after Prateik was born, Smita Patil passed away from problems related to childbirth.

Prateik recently had the honor of representing his mother's renowned film Manthan on May 17 at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. He talked about how moving it was for him to see his late mother's famous painting.

Prateik Babbar talked candidly about his mother's outstanding achievement at just 20 years old. He was really proud to be her son, he said in an interview with a daily. He stressed that it was a momentous day for Indian cinema and the entire Manthan crew to be honored at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival, 37 years after her death.

She was also praised by Prateik Babbar as the best actor in Indian cinema, saying, "Watching her on-screen at Cannes solidified her legacy and body of work for me. She is undeniably one of the greatest actors in the history of Indian cinema... one of the greatest to ever do it. Period."

He revealed in the same interview that Smita Patil had no acting training and was only 20 years old when she starred in Manthan. "Everybody was in absolute awe of her brilliant and mature performance. She was all of 20 years old and untrained as an actor when she shot the film. This just proves that she was born to be one of the greatest actors to ever do it. I have humongous shoes to fill, but I embrace it all and will never stop striving to be just like her," he further revealed.

Manthan, a 1976 film directed by the well-known director Shyam Benegal, took its cues from Verghese Kurien's revolutionary milk cooperative movement. The film's unique production method—which was fully funded by 500,000 farmers who each paid Rs 2—made it stand out.
