The Laapataa Ladies team has made India proud by being chosen as the country's official submission for the Oscars 2025. Kiran Rao directed the film, which featured young performers like as Nitanshi Goel, Sparsh Shrivastava, and Pratibha Ranta in the key roles. Chhaya Kadam and Ravi Kishan had key parts in the comedy-drama. Following the announcement, jury chairman Jahnu Barua announced that Laapataa Ladies was chosen as India's official Oscar entry based on its 'Indianness' score. Barua stated that a film must depict India's societal structures.
In a media interview, Assamese filmmaker Jahnu Barua, who led the Film Federation of India jury, explained why Laapataa Ladies was chosen as the official entry for the Oscars.
"The jury has to look at the right film that represents India on all fronts. Particularly, the film has to represent India’s social systems and ethos. The Indianness is very important, and Laapataa Ladies scored on that front," Barua revealed.
The filmmaker went on to say that India's "best-suited film" should be sent as the official entry to the Academy Awards. When asked about the list of 29 film titles, he said that the jury could chose from what they were provided.
The 13-member jury, led by Jahnu Barua, 'unanimously' concluded that Laapataa Ladies will represent India in the Best International Film category at the Academy Awards.
On Monday (September 23, 2024), the Film Federation of India announced that Kiran Rao and Aamir Khan's film, Laapataa Ladies, had been chosen as India's official entry for the 97th Academy Awards.
Aamir Khan Productions' official Instagram account also hailed Laapataa Ladies' recent achievement. "Deeply honored and delighted for #LaapataaLadies to be chosen as India’s official entry to #Oscars2025," read the post.
According to a media source, Laapataa Ladies was up against Ranbir Kapoor and Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Animal, Karan Johar's production Kill, and Nag Ashwin's directorial endeavor Kalki 2898 AD for the current Oscar nomination. The list also contained films such as Srikanth, Chandu Champion, Maidaan, Sam Bahadur, Article 370, and many more.
